Last year in september, American Airlines’ AAdvantage programme offered a challenge – fly 25.000 miles, or earn 25.000 elite qualifying points (EQP’s), in stead of the normal 125.000, to become AAdvantage Executive Platinum, with OneWorld Emerald benefits. 25k vs. 125k is a BIG difference! I applied for the challenge, was accepted, and planned my flights to earn those EQP’s.
My first flight started in Barcelona (BCN) and from there I flew to London Heathrow (LHR) in a British Airways Airbus A320 in Business, to Miami (MIA) in an American Airlines (AA) Boeing 777 in Business and finally to Sint Maarten (SXM) in a tiny AA Airbus A319, again in Business.
The Flagship 77W has a really good Business Class product, check Seatguru AA 77W for a seat-map – seats in Business all have direct aisle-access, are fully lie-flat and are really private.
On Sint Maarten I made a quick side-trip to Saba (watch my video of that here). On the return I flew from SXM to Philidelphia (PHL) on an ex-US Airways A330, and via LHR (again on an ex-US A330) to Paris (CDG) with BA. For the outbound I positioned with KLM, and on the return with Air France.
On Sint Maarten I went to Maho Beach a few times, which is a great place for spotters. Airplanes fly over the beach all day, from small island-hoppers to the big Air France Airbus A340 and the KLM Boeing 747.
After this trip I needed only a few thousand more EQP’s for my AAdvantage Challenge – for which I already had a flight planned, so at the moment I’m an AAdvantage Executive Platinum elite 🙂
There will be seperate videos about a few of the flights I did for my challenge; I’m planning at least a flight report about the ex-US Airways American Airlines Airbus A330 in Business Class (SXM-PHL-LHR) and one about American Airlines’ Flagship Boeing 77W service in Business Class.
Please, check out the video – either in the embedded player above, or click here for the video on YouTube, which I would recommend.
Have you been to Sint Maarten and/or Maho Beach? Please let me know in the comments!
